I have officially declared war...
on my desktop! I wouldn't call myself a security nut, but I do
like to take a certain amount of precautions to keep my risk to a
minimum. This includes shutting down open ports that I have no
need to be open. If you don't understand a word I've said so far
then stop reading because it won't make sense to you. Anywho,
ports 5800 and 5900 are currently open on my system...they are the VNC
ports that allow for remote desktop access. Since I'm running
linux and can access everything I could ever want from a command line,
I have no need to leave those ports open...only I can't figure out how
to shut them down. I've google'd to no avail, searched all the
usual suspect files, but I'm just swinging and missing. In past
releases it was as simple as commenting out a line when the display
server starts, but that is aparently no longer the case. At any
rate...I've yet to be beaten by a computer so I'll eventually triumph
but it could be a long cold winter in the trenches!
