Bald at 25
I swear, I think everyone at my company has set out to make me the
baldest (is that even a word?) in addition to being the youngest.
All day I've been doing little more then stressing over user inflicted
problems, they swear they don't know how it happened, they are 100%
positive they didn't do it...but it's there!?!? Well, it turns
out if you install shady programs that you downloaded with a shady file
sharing utility, doesn't it stand to reason that shady things will
happen? I only built the machine last Wednesday, it didn't arrive
at his house until Monday, so in two days he managed to royally screw
it up!?!? After about 20 phone calls and 2 hours he's
straightened out... Funny how when I asked him to read me the
list of installed programs from the Add/Remove programs window he
managed to skip that one...

Then I've spent a few more hours stressing out over how the very first person I set up with our new VPN *can't* connect. I've looked the error up time and time again, but haven't found a thing that would point to a cause. I mean I found some suggestions, but none fit her scenario so I discounted them and moved on. Big mistake, I suppose that completely explains why when you call a tech support line they start off with the most basic solutions, "Is the computer plugged in and turned on?", "Are you connected to the internet?", "Are you typing the correct username/password?". This particular case was the appearance of some sort of firewall blocking access to a particular port, but when I asked how she connected to her high speed provider I was told "the cable goes directly from the wall to the cable modem, then from the cable modem to the ethernet port on the laptop", that means no firewall, unless the machine has it's own firewall turned on, but since the connection is initiated from inside the firewall it should have been allowed. Well after poking and prodding and digging, I went back to her and asked "Who's your high speed provider?" to which I was met with "Netzero". DOH! Netzero only provides dialup access, and I dug a little deeper, and come to find out her apartment complex has highspeed at the office that they let people use when they are at the pool. Her apt is close enough to pick up and use that access. I'm positive that they have that locked down tighter then a level 5 federal penitentiary.
