I have tried for so long to understand the idea behind cracking (this is the correct term for what america has dubbed 'hacking', hacking is the exact opposite of what most of the non-tech think).  I know what it is, and I know that it can be exciting to succeed, but I have yet to see an original attempt to crack my machine, just the script kiddies that found an exploit in a chat room and are dying to give it a try. 
    I was reading through the logs last night (which is a whole story in itself...stalker!) and I saw repeated attempts from several parts of the country to gain access to my machine using a WINDOWS exploit?!?!  I suppose I should be happy that they are running windows exploits on a Linux machine, but it just irks me that someone could be so careless.  It's like showing up for an interview in cut up jeans and a tee shirt with a middle finger on it...you just look dumb!  They have completely given themselves away as attempting to crack my box with a crack that will NEVER work?!?!  You can see what someone is running (at least enough to know if it's worth pushing on) in one simple step.  Type a wrong URL for the domain...ex. http://www.hofftech.net/nothinghere returns the default 404 error, which 70% of people leave in place, and at the bottom you will notice the Apache running on Fedora....  Right there should be your cue to move on or  pull out the right tool for the job.  And this works on windows too, if you hit a windows box, you'll get an error referring to IIS. 
    So I suppose the moral of this story is wise up fools, you've given yourself away and those of us who know what were doing can make your life miserable!!
