Sinking feeling
Well, I now feel like a schmuck...I may have got someone in trouble
that may or may not have done anything. I think they did...but I
didn't actually see them do it, I just pieced things together and drew
a conclusion. The worst part of it is, I told my boss this and he
sent a nasty email out because of it. I was at the datacenter
tonight installing a new storage array, as I was finishing the cabling
I was laying on the floor I could see through our rack and saw that
someone was doing something on the other side. I could only see
them from the waist down, but as the person walked out of view a second
or two later he was at my feet. I didn't pay much attention, I
just tried to move out of the way so he could pass, I kept
cabling. As he passed me by he said "I'm sorry, I'm just doing a
rack inspection". I didn't think anything of it, I kept on going
business as usual, finished up cabling and when I stood back up I
noticed the little blue reminder light was out...this wasn't anything
startling as it frequently comes unplugged. I tried to plug it in
again only it was plugged in all the way. I looked closer and
noticed that the network lights were out also...that means the server
is off...something made me look at the cable management arm and I
pushed it back a little bit and, low and behold, the power cables had
both been yanked out. I quickly pushed them back in and the
server jumped to life. So I then started replaying what just
happened and pieced everything together and realized that the "I'm
sorry" must have been because the guy bumped the protruding cable arm
innocently. When I called back to the office to let them know
what I thought had happened, I made my inferences sound like
fact. I wouldn't have thought any more about it, but Colin sent
out a nasty email to the data center demanding to know who the guy was
and informing him that he'd be sending him the bill for the overtime
costs. At first I thought it was funny, but as traffic was so
backed up due to rain I had nothing but time and my thoughts I started
playing out different scenarios and am now wondering if that guy did it
at all...I know I heard the "I'm sorry" but maybe he bumped me..or the
rack or was saying it because he had to sort of step over me. I
was, after all, running the SCSI cable through the cable management
arm..maybe I unplugged it...I'm always extremely careful around the
hardware, but even I make mistakes...did I make this one? I guess
I just feel guilty that someone else is gonna get in trouble, but
perhaps more so because I accused them with out knowing for sure if
they even did something wrong...guess I'll have to see how this plays
out.
