Tax Time

I'm going crazy here waiting for the last two or three statements to come in so we can go get our taxes done. I hate waiting until the last minute and certainly don't want to be filing an extension. My only dilemma right now is to we do them ourselves or take them somewhere? I know lots of people who have them done and they claim it's not too expensive, but I've had pretty good luck filing them myself these past few years so I don't know why it would be much different now..we really only have a mortgage deduction to tack on... I told Joni that I'll do them online first to get a feel for what we'll get back and if it's substantially higher then last year we'll take them down to have a pro look them over, but I have a feeling we've jumped tax brackets and are probably paying a higher rate then we were last year so it'll probably wash. What do people pay to have someone do their taxes? Comments please!

Regarding your tax preparation question, I prepare our taxes every year using online services. I have used TurboTax.com and found it to be the easiest to use but a little pricey. I have also used TaxSlayer.com which is not as user friendly but cheap. Both allow you to enter all the information and get a result without paying a dime until you print or file. I usually enter the information into both systems and when I get the same results on both systems I then file with the cheaper one. TurboTax will show your running refund/credit balance. I have paid to have taxes done in the past and it always ran close to or just over $100. To me, the hardest part was getting all the documents together and feeling confident that I had everything. Once that was done the data entry is routine. Mortgage interest isnt hard to handle, particularly on TurboTax. Give it a shot before paying someone else. Good luck.

We've used TaxAct Online for the past few years and with good success...I know it keeps the running total and you don't pay until you're done, plus it's only $7.95 or so for Federal and $7.95 for state.

We have a rather complicated tax return, it runs about $400.00 at H&R Block. I use Turbotax (there are several versions)then I go to Block every couple of years to calibrate.
