Bet you thought I forgot!
I bet you all thought I had for got to post
today? Well, your were almost right, I actually did forget.
I have been overwhelmed with sympathy emails and IM's consoling me on
the loss of one of my most beloved posessions (my bike). I'm sure
I'm going to get the standard "where do I rank" from Joni when I get
home. I don't think any woman I've ever dated didn't ask that
question. Joni's the first to outrank/break the tie with my
computers , which have always been number 1, but I still don't
understand what being number one is so exciting for. I could just
as easily accept number 10 as I could number 1, as long as I come
before all other people, I'm content. I guess it's a man vs. woman thing?!?!
I guess we got a bunch more RSVP's back yesterday so I think we've got over 30 and that's basically just extended family, haven't heard from the all the immediate yet. I believe tonight I'll be writing thank you cards for the shower gifts, I have been dodging this for as long as possible. I'm really not much of a writer, I'll type until I'm blue in the face, but I have such horrible penmanship that I try to avoid torturing anyone who might have to decipher it.
I'm sorry for going on for so long on this post...couldn't be helped!

***The non-technical can stop reading now, or at least proceed with caution!***
It has taken me quite a while to write this post,
however. I've been sitting here for over half an hour and my mind
keeps wandering to one of my missions for the day/week. VPN...or
more specifically remote access to files over a secure link.
While this normally isn't any real challange, I have to keep in mind
that 70% of my co-workers are computer illiterrate, and therefore the
solution I ultimately choose, has to be EASY. By easy, I mean
require less brain power then breathing. Here's the scenario:We are on a domain here with a Linux
Primary Domain Controller that hosts several corporate shares. We
have people here and offsite who would benifit greatly if they could
access these shares from their home machines. Not everyone has
access to all shares (some require certain privileges) and I want this
to happen over a secure link.
I've looked into several solutions, the first (and most expensive) is a
VPN or Virtual Private Network (for those that didn't heed the
warning). Which would be a great solution, but is overkill for
what it will actually be used for. The second solution, and the
one I'd be more likely to go with, is tunneling a connection over ssh
to the server. Which I've done and it works quite well and is
FREE. BUT, and you knew that was coming, the only way I can
figure out to make it work, requires disabling the ability to share
folders on your home network. And while that works fine here at
work (I don't want people sharing folders here anyway), it really isn't
a reasonable request. So that leaves me with nuthin'. If
you or your company has encountered this issue and you think you
effectively resolved it, please email me and perhaps get me on the right track. I'm sorry for going on for so long on this post...couldn't be helped!
