Oil Company Profits
As you all may or may not know I listen to news radio all day...and all day I hear constant bitching about the oil company's record profits. I'd like to think that the readers of this blog are smarter then the average bear, but you never know. I understand it sucks that we're paying so much at the pump...I feel for everyone, but if you're one of those people that don't do anything but bitch, then I have no sympathy for you. Until my buddy was let go from work, we carpooled for at least 6 months and as far as I know, we were about the only ones who did. I'm not here to float my own boat, well actually I am. In hearing the latest round of bitching I figured I'd calculate my profits. Turns out you all should be just as pissed at me as the oil companies. Everyone bitches about them making umpteen billion dollars, sadly most American's undersized brains fail to realize that the amount of profit is insignificant compared to the profit margin...which is the percentage of your profit to your total income. Most oil companies pulled down 7-10% last quarter which is really only decent. I had a profit margin of 15% last year, so technically I'm more profitable then an oil company. It's really quite easy to calculate your profit margin...take the money you saved last year (401K, savings, etc) and divide that number by your total income then multiply by 100. If your savings is 0 or less, then don't bother doing the math...you suck with money and are living beyond your means, but if it's a positive number then you can see how you measure up to the oil company too.
