Tax Time!

02/18/08 @ 12:34 pm · By Steve Hoffman · Comments (0) · Leave one
Ugh...don't you just hate tax season?  Typically I do too, but I think I might like it this year!  We always try to plan ahead and have extra taxes withheld from our check because I typically do a lot of consulting throughout the year and that is rarely taxed. So I get walloped on April 15th and we get little or no refund.  Well this year I didn't do any consulting and so there was nothing to cover so it looks like all that money is coming back to me.  We "mock" did our taxes through TaxAct.com just to see what we could expect as a refund, but I think we've now got taxes that are slightly more complex then I can do myself so rather then submit them I'll just use that as a guide line as to what to expect...That is unless a tax preparer is outrageously expensive...then screw that, I'll take my chances.  Add in the tax rebate and we'll be sitting pretty this tax season!  Now to decide what to pay off...I would love to eliminate the student loans, but the interest rate is lower then what we get from our savings account so I can't bring myself to do it.  We have a few purchases that are in their interest free period (and we'll have them paid off before that ends) so I don't want to pay them off either; the only things left are the Car, Boat and House...and it would only make a slight dent in them.  When I actually know what we're getting I'll take a look at the balances put the money somewhere.  Maybe I'll do what the president hopes and use our tax return to pay down debt and our tax rebate to boost the economy.

Now for what you all come here for, a Zack update!  He's dong well, we're still battling this possible milk protien alergy.  It's more of an annoyance then anything else, I don't think he's suffering, actually Mom is more then anything else because she can't eat any dairy or soy products...try cooking a decent meal without them.  It's tough.  He is up more and more each day and sleeping better each night although still not a full night.  Last night he ate at 11:30 and was asleep by 12 then slept until 5:30 this morning. Not a bad stretch!  He is fussing more during the day, he doesn't like to be put down, we try to accomodate him, but we can't hold him constantly so as long as we know he's fed, burped, warm and has a clean diaper we let him cry for a bit in his crib or swing.  After about 10 minutes he either falls asleep, calms down or one of us will pick him back up for a few minutes until he falls asleep.  Almost makes you feel like a bad parent, but I don't see anything wrong with crying...excercises the lungs and gets the blood flowing throughout his whole body...  So short and sweet of it is that we're all doing well and Joni did post a few pictures of him on webshots so check them out when you get a chance.
